June 21, 2023 – The Canyon at Mission Rock, which opened in early June, is the first building in what eventually will be a 28-acre neighborhood just across the Lefty O’Doul Bridge from Oracle Park. The neighborhood, built on what was all surface parking, will eventually have 1,200 apartments, eight acres of parks and 1.7 million square feet of commercial space.

In addition to the Canyon, the first phase includes three buildings: a 303,000-square-foot office building, which Visa has leased for a global headquarters; a 255-unit apartment complex; and another commercial building, likely for biotech. Also, 40% of the project’s residential portion is below-market-rate units, mostly targeting middle-income families.

The Giants started working on the project 15 years ago — back when Gavin Newsom was mayor, the team had not yet won a world championship in their San Francisco era, and Crawford was playing for UCLA. Eventually, after a global recession, a revolving cast of development partners and three world championships, the Giants teamed up with veteran builder Tishman Speyer to make a go of it.
